PageRank (here showed as PR) is a value showed as a number that indicates how important a page is on Internet. To calculate the PR of a website, Google check how many pages are linking to this website.

Google figures that when one page links to another page, it's like casting a vote for the other page. The more votes a page get, the more interesting that page should be.

Also, higher is the PR of the page casting the vote, more important will be that vote. PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance and play a role when time is coming to show results on its search engine. Effectively, if a page have a high pagerank, that means that its interesting. If its interesting in regards of a specific topic, this page your be presented first in search results for that specific topic. Obviously, the PR is not the only factor, but its certainly an important one.

Increasing PR is a long run job. First, you won't get a good PageRank in the weeks you launch your website. You have to be patient and methodic.
The best way to help your website getting a good PR is to have some other website have link to your pages.

Try to ask some other website in your niche (same topic or complementary topic) if they want to add a link to your website. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't.

Add your website to directories. There's thousands of directories on the Web. The more directories you get your website in, the more backlinks you get.

Try to get some bloggers to talk about you. Blogs are some specific website that have good "trust rank" with Google. Google loves them. If you can get some blogs to talk about you, be sure they will include a link to your pages.

Be sure your website is alive.  Update it frequently.  Be sure you don't have pages that points to 404 pages. 

To help you gain credibility. As soon as your website get a PageRank of 2 and more, that means that your website is starting to be interesting for Google eyes. Be proud of it! And say it to your visitors who will begin to see your as a credible source of information.
